This Thing Called Life:
On Earth
Hopeful, funny, and deeply curious about what it means to be alive.
Earth sent a message. The whales carried it. Tink sent it beyond the stars.
Tink Keller fixes things. Radios, machinery, electronics—if it is broken, ze can probably make it work again. People are more complicated.
Tink has built a comfortable, unconventional life in the wetlands of western Michigan with Jorge, a long-obsolete android ze restored after finding him underwater, where he had spent years waiting to be found. Then there is Pixel, a small black cat with one conspicuous white circle on her head and an uncanny talent for being exactly where the action is.
Life is strange enough already.
Then the whales begin making a sound no one can explain.
Tink discovers that the mysterious signal is not random. It is part of something larger—something moving through the world's oceans and reaching across species. When conventional explanations fail, Tink does what Tink does best: listens, tinkers, and finds a way to send the message farther.
Much farther.
Something answers.
The visitors who arrive belong to an ancient Stewardship devoted to protecting life wherever it takes root. Their presence offers extraordinary possibilities, but it also raises questions that reach beyond technology and beyond Earth itself. What responsibilities come with intelligence? What does it mean to protect a living world? And what happens when humanity discovers it was never as alone—or as separate from the rest of life—as it imagined?
Before long, Tink's quiet patch of Michigan becomes the unlikely center of something the entire world wants to see, understand, explain, exploit, livestream, argue about, and possibly put on television.
Fortunately, Tink has Jorge.
And Pixel.
Things should be fine.
Probably.
Hopeful, funny, and deeply curious about what it means to be alive, This Thing Called Life: On Earth is science fiction about stewardship, found family, connection, curiosity, and humanity's place in a living universe.
The future is not guaranteed.
Humanity still has a choice.
